Strengths:
- High-End Yield Potential
- Excellent Straw Strength
- Moderately Resistant to Stripe Rust
Comments:
WB-Cedar may need to be sprayed for Leaf Rust some years, but it is moderately resistant to Stripe Rust, including the 2012 race. It has good staygreen and holds its leaves better than most early varieties and it fills well. WB-Cedar is a very high tillering variety, but needs to establish and tiller well in the fall to reach its potential. Performance in 2014 was more uneven than in previous years, partly due to lack of tillering in the fall.
Phillips Seed's Management Tips:
- WB-Cedar responds well to a high level of management.
- WB-Cedar yield in the 2014 KSU yield trials were down a little overall from the stellar yields of the two previous years, but still had yields as high as 115% of plot average.
- Plant after the "fly free" date and control volunteer to reduce Barley Yellow Dwarf and Wheat Streak Mosaic.
- Not a good choice to plant after corn.
- One of the few varieties left with some Stripe Rust resistance.
